A line from a New York Times editorial ("Elmo Gets Wired", by Gail Collins, 24 April 2001, reachable here on Media Squatters, a Douglas Rushkoff mailing list) jumped out and instantly struck me as ridiculous: "Some educators don't think preschoolers should be using computers at all..." Dancing computers on Sesame Street aside, it's alarming to think that educators are split like this along pro- and anti-computer lines. But maybe (er...) netizens are too, when it comes to their own wee ones. The ISP industry barrels on, launching new services for preschoolers. Are computers really hurting kids, i.e. stopping them from learning? Rugrats of all ages have been Tickling Elmo virtually for years.
